Purpose: The purpose of this article is to examine the military and psychological tactics of Imam Hussein (greetings to him) in the Ashura uprising. Addressing this issue can help achieve Islamic intellectual and military methods.
Methods: This article is a content analysis study that was conducted in three stages (data collection, open coding and data analysis, and extraction of concepts and categories). In order to collect data (sermons, conversations, and orders), documentary methods and library techniques were used.
Findings: The uprising of Imam Hussein (greetings to him) occurred at a time when the Islamic society had clearly deviated from the divine path and the atmosphere of the society was inconsistent with Islamic teachings and rulings, and Islam was at risk of destruction and distortion. In fact, by recognizing the incompetence of the ruling regime of the time as the main challenge of society and considering its context and causes, a fundamental solution was considered, which was accompanied by extraordinary military and psychological tactics. These tactics and techniques include: accurate assessment of the battlefield, appropriate and correct use of terrain features, arrangement of planned military formations to counter sudden enemy attacks, recitation of epic poems, explanation of the identity and spiritual status of the Holy Family of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), exposing falsehood and denigrating the enemy's lineage, creating a rift and polarizing the enemy, and using central insight and ethics to make the most of the imbalance between the warring parties and the difficult and imposed conditions.
